Reasons
-
Reserves will likely remain sufficient to cover 4-5 months of imports, but the heavy capital goods import bill will keep the total slightly below the $7B mark.
-
From $6.2B the target needs less than a billion of accumulation, and BoT is buying locally mined gold at the best prices on record — a direct reserve pump most central banks do not have. Import cover should hold in the 4-5 month range alongside it.
-
BoT's domestic gold purchasing program and solid export receipts will successfully preserve import cover within the target 4–5 months range. Reaching an absolute reserve stock of $7B by end-2026, however, is a high bar given ongoing debt service obligations.
-
Import cover in the 4-5 month range is consistent with current trends, but adding roughly $800M in stock terms inside little more than a year is a bigger ask than steady gold and tourism inflows alone typically deliver. Cover holding without the stock target being hit is the more likely combination.
-
Import cover can remain near four to five months as gold and tourism inflows offset external payments. Reaching $7B by December requires a faster absolute accumulation than the remaining time and import growth comfortably support.
-
The target requires steady accumulation rather than an exceptional jump, and high gold receipts support that process. Import cover should remain within the stated range as reserves rise.
-
Getting from $6.2B to $7B is roughly 13% over fourteen months, and BoT has an unusually direct lever: buying domestic gold at record prices. Tourism receipts on top of that make both the stock and the cover target reachable.
-
Import cover can hold near 4–5 months even if the $7B stock target is tight.
