Overview
GERD (reflux) happens when stomach acid rises into the gullet. Large meals, lying down after eating, and some foods can worsen symptoms. Chest pain that could be cardiac needs emergency care—do not assume it is always reflux.
Possible causes
- Loosened oesophageal sphincter
- Large / fatty meals
- Excess weight
- Pregnancy
- Medicines or caffeine / alcohol
When to see a doctor
Seek care if burning lasts, swallowing is hard, you vomit blood, or you have chest pain.
