Overview

Fits (seizures) can come from epilepsy, high fever (especially in children), blood sugar problems, or head injury. During an episode, protect the head and do not put objects in the mouth. Emergency assessment is needed after a first fit.

Possible causes

  • Epilepsy
  • High fever (febrile seizures in children)
  • Low or high blood sugar
  • Head injury
  • Brain infection (less common)

When to see a doctor

Call emergency services for a fit lasting over 5 minutes, repeating fits, breathing trouble, or a first adult seizure.
