Overview

Fainting can follow long standing, dehydration, pain, or heart problems. After fainting, assessment is warrantedโ€”especially for older adults or if it recurs. Do not drive until evaluation is done.

Possible causes

  • Sudden low blood pressure
  • Dehydration
  • Severe pain or fear
  • Heart rhythm problems
  • Low blood sugar

When to see a doctor

Get emergency care after fainting, especially with chest pain, confusion, or injury.
