Overview

Blood in stool can come from hemorrhoids, anal fissures, stomach ulcers, or other diseases. Colour and amount help clinicians, but do not self-diagnose. Heavy bleeding, dizziness, or severe pain is an emergency.

Possible causes

  • Hemorrhoids or anal fissures
  • Stomach or duodenal ulcers
  • Gut infections
  • Polyps or growths
  • Medicines that irritate the stomach

When to see a doctor

Get care promptly for visible blood, tar-like black stool, dizziness, or severe abdominal pain.
