Overview
Blood in semen (hematospermia) can follow infection, prostate irritation, or minor trauma. It often settles on its own in younger adults, but still deserves checking. Older adults or those with other symptoms need sooner evaluation.
Possible causes
- Urinary or prostate infection
- Irritation after procedures
- Sexually transmitted infections
- High blood pressure
- Unknown cause (often)
When to see a doctor
Visit a clinic if you see blood in semen, especially if it repeats or you have pain, fever, or trouble urinating.
