Cholera

Also known as: Vibrio cholerae infection, Epidemic diarrhoea

Cholera condition guide: symptoms, causes, prevention, and when to seek care. Educational only — not a diagnosis.

Overview

Cholera is caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria. It spreads quickly where clean water and safe toilets are lacking. The main danger is severe dehydration, especially in children.

Symptoms

  • Sudden watery diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Intense thirst
  • Muscle cramps
  • Severe weakness
  • Sunken eyes or dry skin
  • Less urine

Causes

Bacteria enter through contaminated drinking water or food. Crowding and flooding increase outbreaks.

Treatment (general information)

The essential treatment is oral rehydration solution right away. Severe cases may need intravenous fluids in hospital. Antibiotics may be used in some cases under clinical advice.

Prevention

Use boiled or treated water, wash hands after toilet use, clean produce, and use safe latrines. Report outbreaks to health authorities quickly.

When to see a doctor

Go to a health facility immediately for heavy watery diarrhoea, forceful vomiting, or signs of dehydration.

Frequently asked questions

Is ORS always enough?
ORS is the foundation, but severely dehydrated patients need hospital care. Do not wait.
Does cholera spread by touch alone?
The main risk is contaminated water and food, not casual skin contact. Handwashing still matters.
