Vaginal yeast infection

Also known as: Thrush, Candida infection, Vaginal candidiasis

Vaginal yeast infection condition guide: symptoms, causes, prevention, and when to seek care. Educational only — not a diagnosis.

Overview

A vaginal yeast infection comes from overgrowth of Candida, fungi that normally live on the body. When they overgrow, they cause itching and white discharge. It is not always an STI, but sex can be uncomfortable during symptoms.

Symptoms

  • Intense vaginal itching
  • Thick white discharge
  • Burning when urinating
  • Redness of the vulva
  • Pain during sex
  • Swelling of the labia

Causes

Antibiotics, pregnancy, poorly controlled diabetes, damp underwear, and weakened immunity can trigger yeast overgrowth.

Treatment (general information)

Antifungal medicines as cream or tablets may be prescribed. Avoid harsh soaps and do not self-treat repeatedly without assessment. If symptoms return, check for diabetes or other causes.

Prevention

Wear cotton underwear, change out of wet swimwear, avoid scented vaginal products, and manage diabetes.

When to see a doctor

Seek care if it is your first episode, you have fever or abdominal pain, or symptoms do not clear after treatment.
