Ingredients
- 1 large Red onion
- 3 large Tomatoes
- 1 cup Fresh coriander
- 2 Limes
- 1 Fresh chili
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- pinch Black pepper
How to cook Salad
Tanzanian kachumbari salad is raw onion, tomato, coriander and lime — the essential side for nyama choma, pilau and fish. Daily on home and restaurant tables. Kachumbari is mandatory coastal accompaniment.
- Dice onion very fine or slice thinly.
- If onion is sharp, soak in cold salted water 10 minutes, drain.
- Dice tomatoes, discard excess seeds and juice.
- Chop coriander leaves, discard thick stems.
- Mince fresh chili finely.
- Combine onion, tomato, coriander and chili in a bowl.
- Squeeze lime juice over everything.
- Toss with spoon or hands, add salt and pepper.
- Rest salad 5 minutes before serving.
- Serve with nyama choma, pilau, fish or mishkaki.
Tips
- Tanzanian kachumbari has oil — lime and salt are the dressing.
- Watery tomatoes make soggy kachumbari.
- Briefly soaked onion tastes milder.
