Ear Discharge

Ear Discharge symptom guide: what it can mean, possible causes, and when to seek care. Educational only.

Overview

Ear Discharge can be a symptom of many different conditions. This card offers general educational orientation only; a clinician can help assess causes and next steps. Seek care if symptoms are severe, sudden, or persistent.

Possible causes

  • Cold or sinus issues
  • Ear or throat infection
  • Allergy
  • Air pressure changes
  • Other ENT causes

When to see a doctor

Seek urgent care if symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or come with trouble breathing, severe chest pain, confusion, or heavy bleeding. Otherwise, talk with a clinician if they last several days or interfere with daily activities.
