Breast pain

Also known as: Mastalgia, Breast tenderness

Breast pain symptom guide: what it can mean, possible causes, and when to seek care. Educational only.

Overview

Breast pain often relates to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or an ill-fitting bra. Ongoing one-sided pain with a lump or skin change deserves evaluation. Over-the-counter medicine alone is not a substitute for assessment.

Possible causes

  • Menstrual hormone changes
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Ill-fitting bra
  • Inflammation or infection
  • Chest wall muscle strain

When to see a doctor

See a clinic if pain is severe, one-sided, or comes with a lump, fever, or skin changes.
