Breast lump

Also known as: Breast mass, Breast nodule

Breast lump symptom guide: what it can mean, possible causes, and when to seek care. Educational only.

Overview

A breast lump may be a cyst, fibrocystic tissue, or another cause—not every lump is cancer. Still, a new, irregular, or changing lump needs assessment. Do not delay checking out of fear.

Possible causes

  • Breast cysts
  • Fibrocystic changes
  • Infection or abscess
  • Injury
  • Growths that need further tests

When to see a doctor

Visit a clinic promptly for a new lump, nipple discharge, breast skin changes, or a growing mass.
