Also known as: Coronavirus disease 2019, SARS-CoV-2 infection
COVID-19 condition guide: symptoms, causes, prevention, and when to seek care. Educational only — not a diagnosis.
Overview
COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and spreads through respiratory droplets and air from an infected person. Some people have mild cold-like illness, while others develop severe lung disease. Older adults and people with chronic conditions face higher risk.
Symptoms
- Fever
- Dry cough
- Tiredness
- Sore throat
- Loss of smell or taste
- Shortness of breath
- Muscle aches
Causes
The virus spreads when someone coughs, sneezes, talks, or breathes near others, especially in poorly ventilated rooms. Touching contaminated surfaces and then the face can also contribute.
Treatment (general information)
Most people recover with rest, fluids, and fever relief under advice. Anyone with breathing difficulty or higher risk needs clinical assessment. Follow national health guidance on testing and medicines.
Prevention
Stay up to date with recommended vaccines, wash hands, stay home when ill, improve ventilation, and wear a mask in crowded indoor spaces when advised.
When to see a doctor
Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, chest tightness, bluish lips, or fever lasting several days.
Frequently asked questions
- Is COVID-19 different from a cold?
- Symptoms can overlap, but COVID-19 can cause more severe illness and wider spread. Testing helps tell them apart.
- Can I spread it without symptoms?
- Yes. Some people transmit the virus before feeling ill or without clear symptoms.
