Cataracts condition guide: symptoms, causes, prevention, and when to seek care. Educational only — not a diagnosis.
Overview
A cataract forms when the eye lens clouds, most often with age. It can also relate to diabetes, injury, or long-term sun exposure. Surgery restores vision for many people.
Symptoms
- Cloudy or hazy vision
- Glare from lights
- Colours looking faded
- Trouble seeing at night
- Frequent glasses changes
- A cloudy film over vision
Causes
Age is the main factor. Diabetes, smoking, eye injury, long-term steroids, and UV light can speed the process.
Treatment (general information)
Glasses may help for a while. Surgery to remove the cloudy lens and place an artificial one is the main treatment. Decide timing with an eye clinician.
Prevention
Manage diabetes, wear sunglasses, avoid smoking, and get regular eye checks, especially after age 40.
When to see a doctor
Seek care if vision drops quickly, the eye is painful, or sight limits daily activities.
Frequently asked questions
- Do eye drops cure cataracts?
- No. Drops do not clear a cloudy lens. Surgery is the treatment that restores vision.
- Is surgery risky?
- As with any procedure there are risks, but for many people it is safe and successful. Your clinician will explain personal risks.
